Parlance

Effective August 20, 2026

Terms of service

These terms govern your use of the Parlance app and this website. By using either, you agree to them.

The service

Parlance delivers one vocabulary word per week, drawn from a source you choose. Definitions, usage notes, and word selections are produced in part by machine. We work to make them accurate and honest — the app never fabricates quotations, and pronunciations come from published lexicons or not at all — but the content is provided for general reference, not as authoritative lexicography.

Your content

When you paste your own text into Parlance, you keep every right you have in it. You grant us permission to process it for one purpose: generating your word list, including sending it to our service provider for that processing, as described in the privacy policy.

Paste only text you have the right to use. Do not submit text that is unlawful, or that contains other people's personal information. We may decline to process input that our systems flag, and we may refuse service for abuse of the generation endpoint.

Acceptable use

Intellectual property

The Parlance name, mark, design, and software are ours. Word lists generated for you are yours to use personally; they are not licensed for redistribution as a dataset.

Availability and changes

The app works offline once your word list is generated. The generation service itself is provided as-is; we may change, suspend, or discontinue it. We may update these terms, and will change the effective date above when we do. Continued use after a change means you accept the new terms.

Disclaimers and liability

Parlance is provided "as is", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose. To the maximum extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of the service, and our total liability is limited to the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim — which, for a free app, is nothing.

Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations; where the law says otherwise, the law wins.

Apple

The app is distributed through Apple's App Store and your use of it is also subject to Apple's standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement. Apple is not responsible for the app or its content and has no obligation to provide support for it.
